Research Around The World

This week, I decided to focus on research around the world. I have a special penchant for Sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, I decided to overview research in that part of the world. The website I studied was http://www.ecdvu.org/ssa/generative.php. The studies posted on that on the virtual university of Victory were conducted by African students from various English-speaking countries. However, most of the research projects were conducted before 2005. Early childhood education is facing with many serious challenges in sub-Saharan Africa. While lack of knowledgeable educators and funding seem to be the common denominator, some of the other issues seem to relate to accessibility, curriculum development, and leadership. I do not believe I learned anything noteworthy in this website because all the information seems very outdated. I definitely think there are many international organizations that provide current studies on early childhood education in Africa such as UNICEF, the World Bank. I do not understand the choice for this website.

  1. Nar,
It is unfortunate that you did not feel the information provided was informative. I wonder why it has been so long since the website was updated. Thank you for providing alternate ways of finding information on the part of the world.

  2. Nar,

I started with this site as well but switched to the Australian one for that reason. I thought maybe I was in the wrong area looking or something. Hmmm. Thanks for looking though and for posting. Every opinion counts! Have a good week!

  3. Nar,

I remember reading something in one of my other classes about Africa and I found the information on the UNICEF website. They have a program called Little Village that reminds me of Head Start here in the United States. It reminds me of the home based model because they go out into the villages to teach the children. It excited me so much that I have set a goal to one day visit and see that program in action. I have to get my nerve up to fly first.

  4. Nar, Very interesting perspective. I think the website had so great information, and your perspective is accurate. Some of the material is dated. But, I have found that with a great deal of the material we have been using, however it still seems very relivant the current status of the early childhood field. I feel the material is dated because change has been slow in our field. Great post though, it really made me think.

  5. Nar,

Great post. It might be the website is outdated because of the lack of early childhood professionals in that area, therefore no one it might be hard to keep it updated. But UNICEF does offer some great information. Hopefully they will have some early childhood advocates in that area soon to help those children and the families.
